Consider applying for the role of Environmental Compliance Specialist on the NASA Environmental and Medical Contract (NEMCON) at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), Florida.

You will play an essential role in supporting the NASA Environmental Assurance Branch (EAB) by ensuring compliance with petroleum, oils, and lubricants (POL) storage and management in alignment with Federal Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) regulations, and relevant Florida Administrative Codes (FAC), all while updating the KSC-wide SPCC plan.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the subject matter expert (SME) in SPCC and Florida regulated storage tanks compliance.
  • Assist with the preparation of documents for registration, installation, modification, testing, or closure of regulated storage tanks, including participation in agency inspections.
  • Compile and review data from KSC contractors to complete updates to the KSC SPCC Plan.
  • Maintain the KSC SPCC Site Specific Plan Database to effectively manage regulated POL storage activities.
  • Conduct engineering design reviews for proposed construction involving regulated storage tanks to ensure adherence to internal policies and regulations.
  • Participate in internal surveillance inspections, auditing for compliance and assisting the KSC contractor community in addressing findings.
  • Engage in internal compliance audits and collaborate with the contractor community to resolve inspections findings.
  • Stay informed about proposed regulations or changes related to SPCC and storage tanks to identify impacts on NASA-KSC operations.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area, ensuring compliance with safety policies.

Required Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge of federal regulations concerning SPCC and Florida storage tanks.
  • Understanding of storage tank systems and compliance requirements, with experience in inspections and reporting.
  • General knowledge in environmental media such as water quality and hazardous waste.
  • Strong mathematical skills, effective communication abilities, and able to interpret complex regulations.
  • Experience with GIS software for mapping POL storage and spill details.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid driver's license and eligibility for federal clearance.
  • Pass an occupational health physical for job qualifications.
  • Excellent organizational skills and teamwork abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Relevant certification such as Steel Tank Institute Certified Tank Inspector, or willingness to obtain within one year.

Education:

Bachelor's degree in environmental science, geology, chemistry, biology, or a related scientific discipline with a minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience.

Working Conditions:

Periodic physical exertion may be required, including walking on uneven terrain and lifting up to 25lbs, sometimes while wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).

Clearance Requirements:

Must be able to obtain a Public Trust Clearance.
