Job Description: Community Organizer, Greene County About the Center for Coalfield Justice: The Center for Coalfield Justice (CCJ) fights for coalfield communities through advocacy, education, and organizing. Our approach to working with area residents values their knowledge about the land, waterways, and communities. Our recognition of local expertise is grounded in the belief that people who are facing injustice directly are the most knowledgeable and should be leading the efforts toward justice. We blend organizing, communications, legal, and policy strategies to build power with and for residents across Washington and Greene Counties. Our mission: to improve policy and regulations for the oversight of fossil fuels extraction and use; to educate, empower, and organize coalfield residents; and to protect public and environmental health. Community Organizer Role: The Community Organizer will work on environmental and social justice issues, with a primary focus on Greene County. This role will serve as a primary contact for members, supporters, and community members within Greene County, working with the rest of the team depending on the specific issue or interest. The Organizer must be able to work with directly impacted people and invest in their ability to advocate for themselves and their communities. This position will be managed by the Organizing Director and will be expected to work independently as well as in collaboration with other staff. Responsibilities: Actively engage with community members, both in-person and online Have one-on-one conversations with residents to understand their concerns and support them in finding solutions Build deep connections and trusting relationships Reach out to residents, members, and supporters through canvassing, email, phone banking, texting, and social media engagement to share information and opportunities for engagement With support from the Events Coordinator, plan campaign-related events Identify and support local leaders; invest in leadership development Host community events and trainings In collaboration with the full team, provide opportunities for collective action and civic participation Support active issue-based campaigns within Greene County Strategize with the full team and members Develop action steps, such as community meetings, petitions, events, etc Attend community events and relevant meetings throughout the year Represent CCJ in coalition spaces, as appropriate Provide support to other staff and volunteers as needed. Qualifications: Resident of Greene County A deep commitment to CCJ’s mission and awareness of issues in our region Experience in community organizing, as staff or volunteer, or willingness to learn Outgoing people-person, more extroverted than introverted; strong interpersonal skills Self motivated, independent worker Works well in fast paced team environment and respects deadlines Strong communication skills, particularly verbal Ability to work effectively and creatively with diverse people and organizations Willingness to work flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends, and occasionally long hours Proficiency with Google Workspace tools (Drive, Docs, Sheets, GMail, etc), social media, and willingness to develop additional skills Travel: The Community Organizer will be based in our Washington, PA, office and is eligible for hybrid work. Owning or regular access to an operating car is required. Willingness to travel and the ability to navigate cities and rural communities is required. Travel to coalition and ally meetings across the region is required. Opportunities to travel across the country for training or conferences can be expected. CCJ provides mileage reimbursement at the Federal rate and covers overnight lodging when working away from home.
