Chemistry Department Teaching Assistant – Spring 2026 Requisition Number: DU14044 Department: 8E030: Chemistry Location: Lexington, KY Salary: Determined by the college/university Position type: Student, Part-Time Time commitment: Full semester, approximately 20 hours per week Required Education Current UK graduate student in good standing with the Graduate School; GPA of 3.0 or higher Completion of General Chemistry with Lab and Organic Chemistry with Lab (CHE 105, 107, 111, 113 or equivalents); received a B or better (A preferred) Other Requirements No specific related experience required. Physical requirements: Ability to lift and/or carry light-weight objects; standing for up to 3 hours at a time. Shift: Monday through Friday; exact schedule varies by course and section. Refer to the course catalog for potential shifts. Job Summary & Responsibilities Complete the Graduate School TA Orientation, departmental orientation, and Environmental Health & Safety Training courses (Chemical Hygiene Plan / Laboratory Safety or Annual Refresher; Hazardous Waste, specific; Chemical Fume Hood; Fire Extinguisher Training; Emergency Eyewash and Safety Shower Station Use & Inspection). Attend weekly TA/ULA meetings. Prepare, clean‑up, and manage laboratory safety before, during, and after class. Instruct and monitor up to 24 students per section, under the supervision of the Academic Coordinator: Provide pre‑lab directions. Assist with experiments. Answer questions and provide feedback in person and online via email, Piazza, or other discussion sites. Offer three office hours per week in the General Chemistry Learning Center. Proctor exams and assessments. Grade and evaluate student work according to rubrics; assist with spot‑checking grades, resolving discrepancies, and determining final grades. Maintain records and retention of student coursework via the Learning Management System and hard copies. Participate in professional development activities, including orientation, weekly meetings, in‑lab observations, and end‑of‑semester evaluations. Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position. Compensation & Benefits Stipend. Tuition scholarship provided by the UK Graduate School/College of Arts & Sciences.
