Admittedly, I’m not a huge fan of the royal wedding. Maybe it’s simply because I’m not British. I am, however, attracted to it insofar as it’s a spectacle which offers plenty of fodder for commentary. [ e.g, why they’re spending a fortune (roughly just a little more than the average price of three weddings in the US) to turn Westminster Abbey into an indoor forest.]

But there are more interesting topics. Msgr. Campion has a recent article in Our Sunday Visitor discussing the Catholic history of Westminster Abbey, the church where the royal wedding will take place tomorrow.

I had no idea that it was originally a Benedictine Monastery dedicated to St. Peter.

Couple of interesting facts:

– [A]lmost every king or queen of England has been crowned in the church, the last being Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

– Last year, Pope Benedict XVI joined the Anglican archbishop of Canterbury at evensong (Anglican vespers) in Westminster abbey.

While I won’t be staying up late to catch the royal wedding live, I wish them well and certainly do not envy them their public life. (For more on that, Christopher Hitchens’ Slate piece is a must read.)

But I am planning my evening schedule tonight around the newest episodes of “The Office” (Is this Michael’s good-bye?) and “30 Rock.” (Can’t wait to see Condoleezza Rice guest star.) I know, there’s no accounting for taste.

And I’ll be pulling an all-nighter Saturday night to watch JP2’s beatification.

There’s a great article by LZ Granderson, a writer for CNN.com and ESPN. It also goes hand in glove with a recent piece I wrote. Most of the time when we have articles about modesty and young girls, it’s a white gal like myself or a mom like Jennifer Moses. Granderson is a father and he’s a black man. Guess what folks? We’re all saying the same thing. This has nothing to do with race or gender or any other social demographic. It’s about common sense: parents need to be parents, not BFFs.

As Granderson notes, we can carry on all we want about young girls dressing too provocatively, but ultimately we ought to be talking about the parents, something that the interviewer in the above clip seems to wrestle with. It’s not the 10-year-old who drives herself to the mall, much less does she earn the money with which to buy porn-inspired fashion. A parent or some other adult has to facilitate the entire shopping experience. I made this point in 2005 when I gave a talk at a fashion conference in New York. Like Gunderson, I used the same Abercrombie & Fitch example of thong underwear for young girls. You might recall – it happened in 2002. Family groups protested. But before AF could pull the item from its stores, the item sold out. That means that parents took their daughters to the mall and gave them the money to dress like tramps. As Gunderson writes, “What the hell is wrong with us [them/you]?”

His entire article is worth reading, but let me share one of my favorite parts with you:

I don’t care how popular Lil’ Wayne is, my son knows I would break both of his legs long before I would allow him to walk out of the house with his pants falling off his butt. Such a stance doesn’t always makes me popular — and the house does get tense from time to time — but I’m his father, not his friend.

Friends bow to peer pressure. Parents say, “No, and that’s the end of it.”

The way I see it, my son can go to therapy later if my strict rules have scarred him. But I have peace knowing he’ll be able to afford therapy as an adult because I didn’t allow him to wear or do whatever he wanted as a kid.

Yesterday I wrote about an NPR and Planned Parenthood collective effort to attack the recent Vitae ad campaign that ran here in Seattle.

Upon further research, it looks like NPR took its cue from an article in The Stranger, a local independent paper which ran a story about the adds a few weeks ago. In fact, the debate is not about the Vitae ads per se, but about the recently failed legislation that would have required pregnancy help centers to advertise that they don’t provide abortions. From the article:

The bill that would’ve held religious pregnancy centers accountable for being honest in their advertising and up front about the services they don’t provide—abortion referrals, birth control, comprehensive women’s health care—is dead. So these billboards can advertise sites that promote scare tactics to vulnerable women. It’s sickening that the legislature failed to pass a measure to fix this problem.

And yesterday, they followed up with yet another rant: Anti-Choice Billboard Group Wants to Save Whatever Happens to Be Growing Inside You. [Both articles contain expletives.]

Meanwhile, the Seattle Clinic Defense has jumped into the fray, organizing rallies to support Planned Parenthood. Today, they’ve scheduled a protest of the the 40 Days For Life prayer vigil at a local Planned Parenthood. Let’s hope they’re as peaceful as the 40 Days for Life people have been.

Somehow, I doubt it. The organizer of the local 40 Days vigil has had feces spread on her car, objects thrown at her while she was praying, and her house egged.

Meanwhile, I can’t wait for Planned Parenthood to announce that they don’t promote parenthood and I’d love some transparency about the “peaceful” attacks on the local 40 Days organizer.

NPR + Planned Parenthood = More Bias

Just this week, KUOW, NPR’s Seattle station, ran a story on the “Controversy Surrounding Limited Service Pregnancy Centers.” In fact, it was a direct attack on a local ad campaign undertaken by the Vitae Foundation, a client of mine. (Vitae’s response is here.)

The problem with the ad campaign? It offered women choiceS – gasp! – about their pregnancies. It provided a website which clearly states that women have several options including abortion. It also makes clear that the website neither promotes nor refers for abortions. That’s pretty straightforward.

But NPR did the story without contacting Vitae and, apparently, without consulting much of the website. It did however spend quite a bit of time hearing from the public affairs director of the local Planned Parenthood. Their complaint? They don’t like the competition that Vitae represents. Somebody hand them a box of tissues, please. In the meantime, let legitimate organizations get back to doing the legitimate work of trying to reach their audiences.

At the same time, the battle to limit the free speech of pregnancy help centers wages on. Legislation that would have required PHCs to advertise that they don’t provide abortions was defeated in the state legislature earlier this year. So, similar efforts are now expected at the county level, following the same pattern in New York and Maryland. The Baltimore city ordinance was overturned by a district court on the grounds that it was unconstitutional because it limited the right to freedom of speech of the PHCs. (You can read my commentary along with the decision here.) Nevertheless, abortion providers and supporters continue to try and force the same unconstitutional provisions in other parts of the country. One can’t help but wonder if NPR, or at least this particular NPR journalist, is using its broadcasting ability to support these efforts. At the very least, they aren’t offering unbiased and fair journalism.

All the while, Planned Parenthood itself misleads the public about the services it provides. LiveAction just released another expose in which it documents that PP does not provide mammograms even though Cecile Richards, PP CEO, claims that losing their federal funding will impact women for whom they provide mammograms.

The pro-life movement has always argued for transparency beginning with its challenge of the Roe v. Wade decision. It’d be great to see abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, maintain similar transparency.

I’m all for truth in advertising, but it should go both ways. After all Planned Parenthood isn’t known for promoting and facilitating parenthood…

Following on my post yesterday about what I think is a misguided pro-life strategy for removing Planned Parenthood’s federal funding, I came across a Politico article which further confirms my theory. We are just making it easy for Planned Parenthood to raise more money and, in turn, provide more abortions. Read more here in my piece at CatholicVote.org.
